Osborne finds success on the groundPosted Friday, September 11, 2009 by Marietta Daily Journal Online Parrish Walton
Published: September 11, 2009 pwalton@mdjonline.com Osborne football has not had a great deal of success over the past decade, but the tide might be turning as the Cardinals are on the verge of back-to-back wins for the first time since 2001. After defeating Murray County last week, 17-0, Osborne is a win against Woodland from a 2-1 record to start the season. The two wins would surpass last season's win total in just three games. Head coach Troy Jones knows how important getting consecutive wins would be for his program. "I think our program is going in the right direction," he said. "We've played two real competitive and tough games so far and we've split 1-1 and we could have easily won that first one." Right now our young team is still learning how to win and each week we try to take a step towards perfecting our game so whenever we can have some type of consistency in terms of winning, it's going to be huge." Woodland coach Steve Hamilton has taken notice of Osborne's recent success. "I think this is the best Osborne team that I have seen since I've been here," he said. "They are going to be bigger than us, but this is the fastest defense that we have had so hopefully that will help." The main reason why Osborne has had early success this season is due to a two-headed monster at running back. Seniors Jeremi Johnson and Emmitt Rice have combined for over 500 yards rushing through two games and they should each get plenty of carries this week as well. "We're going to do what we've been doing (and run the ball)," Jones said. "Jerimi Johnson and Emmitt Rice and our offensive line are going to have to step up." Those are the guys who are going to be our strength, and we will go to our strength." Woodland is going to try and do much of the same on offense as they will run a T-back set with three running backs and two tight ends all night long. So far this season they are averaging 380 yards rushing each game. Jones and his staff have prepared for this, but he noted that everyone who plays the Wildcats knows what they are going to do. "If you ever play Woodland, you know that they are going to run the football and we are going to have to stop them from doing that," he said. "This is going to be a real physical game because of the style of play that they use. We are going to have to control the line of scrimmage." Copyright 2009, Marietta Daily Journal.
