We are at the quarter poll of the high school football season, and as we head to Week 4 which are the players that have had the biggest impact so far?
Some easy answers are Lassiter quarterback Hutson Mason, who has thrown for more than 700 yards and eight touchdowns, and McEachern’s Rajaan Bennett, who has rushed for approximately 450 yards and seven touchdowns. Both have played well and were expected to. But how about some of those guys that were flying under the radar before the season started. Here are a few to think about:
The tandem of Osborne’s Jeremi Johnson and Emmitt Rice. Johnson and Rice have each ran for more than 300 yards and the two-headed rushing attack has lifted the Cardinals to their first back-to-back wins since 2001 and may have pointed them on the way to their best season since they won nine games in 1994.
Sprayberry receiver P.J. Stone has only 11 of the team’s 31 receptions, but well over half of the Yellow Jackets receiving yards with 220. Stone has become Jerick McKinnon’s favorite receiver and is a dangerous blocker in the open field as one Northwest Whitefield defensive back will attest after being de-cleated when trying to track down another Sprayberry ball carrier.
*Walker freshman Evan Kasian has over 200 yards rushing, 100 yards receiving, five touchdowns and is currently leading the county with four interceptions in three games.
And one more,
*It’s difficult enough when you have to make your first varsity start, but try doing it behind a completely new offensive line with a featured running back that was injured all last year and no significant returning receivers from the ’08 team, but that’s the hand Walton’s Joey Windler was given. All he has done so far this year is rush for more than 400 yards, pass for more than 200 and scored eight touchdowns leading the Raiders’ offense to a 3-0 start.
Of course this is just the players that have caught my eye early this year.
What do you think?
